Fluoride in drinking water was originally added in the
1940's to prevent tooth decay. Studies have now shown that fluoride causes
dental
fluorosis in 10% of the population. Even more disturbing than the cosmetic
impact that fluoride can have on teeth, research is also linking fluoride to
increased risk of cancer (particularly bone cancer) gene mutations reproductive
problems neurotoxicity (hyper or depressed activity) bone fluorosis (decreasing
density). In fact, in 1999, the EPA's Headquarters Union of Scientists took a

The fluoride used for water fluoridation does not have FDA approval and is
considered by the FDA as an "unapproved drug". The proper use of any drug
requires an understanding of how much is too much. Since fluoride is already in
many foods and beverages, an estimated total intake of existing fluoride amounts
is imperative. Research shows fluoridation is unnecessary since we're already
receiving 300% or more of the American Dental Association's recommended daily
amount.

There are plenty of good reasons for installing a fluoride water filter. The fluoride that is added to water also contains other toxic materials and pollutants, which may include lead, mercury, and arsenic. You may not have any control over what goes into your water, but this simple device can easily take it right back out.
Activated alumina filter media, bone char carbon, and reverse osmosis systems are the three EPA and WQA recommended methods for removing fluoride from drinking water. Some companies claim that regular carbon filters will remove fluoride, but this is not correct. Also, don't be fooled by single multi-media cartridge units that contain a small amount of media in addition to carbon - a full cartridge of 100% activated alumina is needed to allow proper contact time for effective fluoride removal! Activated alumina is aluminum oxide, the same chemical substance as sapphire and rubies, but without the impurities that give the gems their color. (This is not aluminum, which is a more highly-processed metal made from activated alumina.) Activated alumina has a very high surface-area-to-weight ratio, with a lot of tunnel-like pores that run all through it. This means that there is a lot of surface area against which the water interacts, thereby removing fluoride (and arsenic). Through the attraction of the metals, 90% to 98% of fluoride (and arsenic) is normally removed. The fluoride coats the surface of the alumina over time and eventually the cartridge needs to be replaced (usually once a year for a family of four). WH-FL - This unit connects to the main water line to filter fluoride for the entire house - all faucets, showers, and baths will have clean, filtered water! The water first passes through a high-flow 1 micron sediment prefilter. This deep pleated cartridge has maximum filtration with minimum pressure loss (only 0.25 psi at 8 gallons per minute). Then the water enters the main tank where a layer of KDF-55 removes chlorine and heavy metals, and makes the unit bacteriostatic. Next the water passes through a bed of HA2-Supra-L high-calcium carbon (bone-char) for removal of fluoride and many other contaminants.
